2019 Platinum Safety Award Winner

Texas Mutual Insurance Company utilizes the Work Safe, Texas Award Program each year to recognize policy holders whose commitment to employee safety sets them apart. Classic Protective Coatings goes above and beyond to ensure worker safety and because of that, Texas Mutual has awarded us with the 2019 Platinum Safety award. This is quite an accomplishment as we are one of just 200 businesses that receive this award out of 72,000 policy holders. “We selected your company because you provide the resources necessary to protect employees from workplace hazards, which is reflected by your outstanding safety record. Simply put, it is clear that safety is a core value in your organization.” Said Eric Bourquin, Vice President Safety Services, Texas Mutual Insurance Company.

Winner of Tnemec Tank of the Year and Peoples Choice Award

With over 20 years’ experience, Classic Protective Coatings has had the opportunity to work on a wide range of tanks from 50,000 to 10 million gallons. Regardless of the size of the tank, time constraints or site conditions we have always had one goal in mind which is to provide industry-leading protective coatings and drive quality execution while operating the safest possible manner one community at a time.

This year Classic Protective Coatings had the opportunity to work with a wonderful community in Wamego, Kanas rehabilitating a 500,000-gallon single pedestal water storage tank. The tank was painted in various shades of red, yellow, green and orange using Tnemec HydroFlon fluoropolymer coatings. The colorful logo was selected to represent Wamego’s connection to the Wizard of Oz. Wamego holds the largest collection of Oz memorabilia and artifacts.

This year’s winner for Tnemec-Tank of the Year and People’s Choice award went to Classic Protective Coatings for the work in Wamego, Kansas. Since 2006, Tnemec has been honoring tank painters across the United States and Canada with Tank of the Year and People’s Choice Award. This is the first year one tank has been selected for both honors. Tank of the Year is selected by a panel of Tnemec water tank enthusiasts. Criteria for judging Tank of the Year includes artistic value, significance of the tank to the community, and challenges encountered during the project. Over 300 water tanks were nominated for this year’s contest and nearly 20,000 votes were cast across the US and Canada for the People Choice Award.
At Classic Protective Coatings we sincerely appreciate the hard work and dedication from all employees not only on the Wamego KS project but all projects we have completed over the past 23 years. Employees are the foundation to any successful company, and we are proud to say most of our employee have been with us with us from day one.

Virginia MN Water Tower Renovation Complete

Classic Protective Coatings recently completed renovation of the 2-million-gallon elevated water storage tank in the small town of Virginia MN. Although the population of Virginia Minnesota is only 8,712, this small town has a remarkable history.

Known as the Queen City, Virginia developed as an iron mining community built for entrepreneurs and financiers including Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller. Virginia also has a rich history for producing exceptional hockey players such as John “Bah” Harrington born and raised in Virginia MN. John was a stand-out hockey player at Virginia High School, who went on to be a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice team that won the Olympic gold medal. When talking about Virginia’s history we also can’t forget to mention former hockey placer Jack Carlson who was born in Virginia. Jack Carlson played for Minnesota fighting saints, Edmonton Oilers, New England Whalers, and in the national hockey league for the MN North Stars and St. Louis Blues. Carlson’s brothers Steve and Jeff also born in Virginia are also former professional hockey players, and famous for their roles in the movie Slap Shot as the two Hanson Brothers.

Why does all this history and the people of Virginia Minnesota matter to Classic Protective Coatings? Classic Protective Coatings is a proud participant of Safe + Sound week, a nationwide event held each August to recognize the successes of workplace safety and health program. As it’s always great to recognizes our successes it’s also important to review any potential hazards so they can be fixed. Most importantly we want to recognize our workers participation and commitment to safety. Our safety program works because we have wonderful employees who stand behind it and implement safety procedures in day to day operations.

Safety Training

Classic Protective Coatings wants to ensure that we provide our employees with a safe and healthy work environment. We want to provide our employees with the tools to recognize safety hazard and the ability to correct. Each year our employees attend annual training to discuss topics such as: Lead and other heavy metals, PPE, Fall Protection, Respirator Protection, Confined Spaces, Ladders, Industrial Trucks and Skid Steers, Scaffolds, Silica in Construction and Hazard Communication just to name a few. Training our employees enables them to have a clear understanding of best safety practices and keep them up-to-date with changing OSHA regulations.

University of MN Tank Renovation

The University of Minnesota selected Classic Protective Coatings to perform the rehabilitation of the existing St. Paul Water Tower in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Scope of Work consisted of coating and repairing an existing 150,000-gallon elevated spheroid water storage tank.

Classic Protective Coatings abrasive blast-cleaned the wet interior tank surfaces to Near White standards SSPC-SP10. The interior wet surfaces will then be coated with a zinc-rich primer and two-coat epoxy system.

The interior dry surfaces were abrasive blast-cleaned to Commercial standards SSPC-SP6 and coated with an epoxy system in the control room at the base of the tank. All failed coating in the dry area were spot prepared to an SSPC-SP11 power tool clean and then coated with an epoxy system.

Exterior tank surfaces were abrasive blast-cleaned to Commercial standards SSPC-SP6 and coated with a zinc-rich primer, epoxy intermediate and urethane finish.

Exterior concrete foundation surfaces will be abrasive blast-cleaned to Concrete standards SSPC-SP13 and coated.

Classic Protective Coatings applied a “M” for the logo which symbolized the University of Minnesota logo.

Due to the tight sight we used Class 1A full containment with a bonnet to ensure no emission escaped and surrounding buildings, people and vehicle did not incur any dust debris or paint damage.

New look for Farmington Water Tower

All who travel into Farmington this summer will see a modern design with shades of blue to showcase new branding efforts that highlight the natural resource of the Vermillion River.

The hydropillar is being renovated after 21 years. This project is expected to take contractor, Classic Protective Coatings approximately 15 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

“I know how important it was to have a modern, fresh logo that represents Farmington moving forward or flowing forward like the Vermillion River that goes through town, and I think this logo represents all of that,” said Lauren Siebenaler, city communications specialist.

The new Farmington city logo displays “Farmington” and the flowing waves on the logo represent the city’s natural resource, the Vermillion River.

The city hired Richard Cassis with Sparc Design, Inc., to create a city water tower image. The council decided to hire this firm because of the water tower image the group designed for the City of St. Cloud.

2 MG GST Custom Upgrades

Classic Protective Coatings crew just completed renovation of a 2 MG ground storage tank in Gillette, Wyoming. Gillette is a community of approximately 30,000 people. The City calls itself the “Energy Capital of the Nation” noting that the state of Wyoming provides nearly 35% of the nation’s coal supply. Over the last decade, Gillette’s population has increased 48%. We are happy to help be apart of revitalizing the community by providing rehabilitation to the ground storage tank. This tank required custom fabrication by extending the staircase on the shell of the tank in addition to adding a staircase from the top balcony up to the center of the roof. Our welders did a fantastic job ensuring all angles were correct to fit the tank perfectly. One thing that sets us apart from other water tank contractors is our ability to do our own in-house welding and fabrication. Our large capacity welding and rigging equipment compliment our highly skilled certified welders. This project required class A full containment, interior wet abrasive blast to SSPC-SP10 with a zinc epoxy coating system, exterior abrasive blast to SSPC-SP6 with a zinc, epoxy, urethane coating system.

8.3 MG Water Tank Renovation

Classic Protective Coatings is in the process of completing renovation of the 8.3 Million Gallon Ground Water Storage Tank in Colorado. Due to the vast size of the ground storage tank, CPC has chosen to utilize our FasterBlaster to abrasive blast for the exterior of the tank. The use of the FasterBlaster will allow us to provide our customer with a uniformed blast while creating minimal dust. Once the tank is blasted it will be coated with Zinc/Epoxy/Urethane system. The interior of the ground storage tank will be sandblasted to a SSPC-SP-10 with the utilization of our ARS Recycling Machine. The ARS unit allows us the ability to reduce cost while also reducing our carbon foot print on the environment. The interior of the tank will be coated with a Zinc/3 coat Epoxy system.
